In November 2016 MIRS organised a Student Debate involving teams of students from Salford University Business School, Manchester Metropolitan University Business School, and Manchester University Alliance Business School. The teams debated three topical and controversial questions related to employment relations, for example 'Has trade unionism increasingly become irrelevant in the world of HRM?'.
Each group gave a 10-minute presentation either'for' or 'against' their respective propositions and then proceeded to challenge their opposing team's standpoints in a lively series of debates. Every team were highly impressive in their substantive academic prowess, ability to defend their position and identify limitations in their opposing team, and their display of sheer passion and verve. The event, which was judged by representatives from the CIPD, Acas and the academy, was attended by 64 students and observers, with a prize awarded to the winning team from MMU.
